Overcoming initial struggles with weight issues, his family encouraged him to pursue sports. Eventually, he found his calling in javelin throw and began his training at the Shivaji Stadium in Panipat. At the age of 23, Neeraj joined the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula under the guidance of Coach Naseem Ahmad. Here, he not only honed his javelin throw skills but also engaged in long-distance running training.

Early Achievements and Growth:

Neeraj Chopra’s journey towards excellence saw significant milestones. By the conclusion of 2012, he had already secured the title of U-16 national champion. In 2014, he clinched his first international medal, a silver, during the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok. The following year marked his success in the national senior championship, securing a medal in the Inter-State event held in Chennai with a throw of 77.33 meters.

Armed Forces and Continued Success:

Impressed by his achievements, the Indian Army enlisted Neeraj as a Junior Commissioned Officer in 2017. He was appointed as a ‘Naib Subedar’ in the Rajputana Rifles, a recognition of his exceptional talent. This marked a turning point in his career, as he received specialized training at the ‘Mission Olympics Wing’ and the Army Sports Institute in Pune. The same year, he achieved a personal best of 87.43 meters at the Diamond League in Doha. He went on to secure gold at the Asian Games on August 27 with a throw of 88.06 meters. However, a setback came in 2019 when an elbow injury forced him out of action for eight months.
